UPDATE 1.0

It’s hard to believe the blog has been going for almost 10 months now. What started as a vague idea – a way to combine our travels with our love of beer; an outlet for our suppressed creative juices; an excuse to organise our travel photos – has turned into a thing. A thing we’re still learning about, but an exciting thing nonetheless.

It’s even harder to believe we’re only just getting our newsletter off the ground now. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a while, but, with two technology challenged people behind the wheel, some things take a while to accomplish!

But it’s all worth it, and here we finally are, volume 1 of Anywhere We Roam’s monthly newsletter. Welcome and thanks for signing up.

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?

The long grey days got a bit much for us towards the middle of April, so we took off for southern Spain to collect a bit of sun. The beaches of Andalucía are always worth a visit, but this time we headed further inland to Córdoba to discover some less visited historical gems.

In May we took off on an epic road trip around Turkey. Starting off with 5 days in Istanbul – rekindling our love for what could possibly be our favourite city – we toured the west coast, exploring ancient ruins and burnt British tourists, before making our way inland to magical Cappadocia. Easily, the highlight of our trip.

LONELY PLANET PATHFINDERS

We don’t normally win things, in fact, I can’t think of the last time either of us won anything. But, this week we got some very exciting news in the form of a nod from Lonely Planet Pathfinders. You can find our article about the Islamic Caliphate in Córdoba on their Top Post from May 2018 here.

NEW ON THE BLOG

In case you’ve missed them. Here are some of our latest articles from the blog. A fascinating exploration through Moorish history, some cool things to do in southern Spain and the start of our Turkey road trip articles.

UNCOVERING THE ISLAMIC CALIPHATE IN CÓRDOBA
In May, we went to Córdoba to explore some of the incredible Moorish sites. What we found were the remnants of an enlightened Islamic Caliphate. Today, the streets of Córdoba tell the story of a progressive, tolerant caliphate, that had come and gone within 100 years / read more
BEST STUFF TO DO IN CÁDIZ, SPAIN
Cádiz is a sleepy Spanish town, best known for being the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Europe. But this is one European destination that is more than the sum of its parts. The best things to do in Cádiz involve just eating and drinking your way through its atmospheric squares / read more
OUR FAVOURITE MOMENTS IN CAPPADOCIA
We almost didn’t go to Cappadocia, but thanks to an adverse reaction to an overly touristy coastal town, we added an extra 8 hours driving to our Turkey road trip. And we were all the better for it. This Turkish gem is full of amazing holiday moments / read more

WHAT’S NEXT?

After spending some (hopefully) sunny time in the UK, we’re off to Iceland in July to do some serious walking, explore some fantastic natural scenery, eat fish and hopefully meet Björk. Iceland is somewhere we’ve both been before, but very excited about going back.
