In Fez, we explored the narrow lanes of its vast medieval medina, while Marrakech combined busy souks and lively squares with an increasingly good restaurant scene.
But it was on the road between the cities that we found the Morocco we liked most. Our route took us through Amazigh villages, over the Atlas Mountains and past deep red-rock gorges before reaching the dunes of the Sahara.
